Welcome back, booknerds! If you made it through the first half of Charles Lever’s Barrington, you’re probably already sweating over what happens next. Spoiler alert: this conclusion delivers big—in size and payoff.

The Story

Pick up right where Volume 1 left off. George Barrington is in a home state: broke, alone in Dublin, and grappling with a family secret. His dad’s shady past just won’t stay buried. Enter a mysterious cousin with a chip on his shoulder and a plot that could ruin the Barringtons for good.

But here’s what gets slippery: the ties between love, money, and old grudges. Two women—the sharp-witted woman and the dangerous one—vie for George. Do they want his heart or are they playing a deeper, more dangerous game? Through mansions, dances, and legal halls, every scene cracks another layer of pretense. The final race, the spectacular shipwreck, and the last-chance toast between the leading men aren’t just fluff; they all point toward one shattering question: after trust is burned to ash, what remains worth surviving for?

Fair warning: This 600+ page book isn’t short. But Lever knows how to repay a patient reader.

Why You Should Read It

I groaned when I saw how long this was. But something hooked me—the way George behaves like a gilded cage, desperate for dignity. The plotting is killer. There’s a well that supplies a whole neighborhood without ever being found, an inheritance that keeps people hostage, and a final murder case that feels edgy for 19th-century writing. Lever snarks about High Society in a way that still lands; he gets that some fights stay the same whether it’s 184 million or a gig grind.

Also worth talking about: the ladies—none of them are shrinking flowers. Even if they face some ‘wifely duty’ junk from the times, there is genuine agency.

The language? It's old-school British with lots of feard and nought, but skip using it—impress yourself, though, just tr When you catch phrases repeated during big climax scenes.

Final Verdict

Who really loves this book? Those hungry for good old thick narrative with a political scandal backbone and a hero you wish the best for. If you like Jane Austen but wish she cared less about manners and more about courtroom hoodoo, this is your shot. Also-advised for fans of saga series like Poldark.

Little confess no: around page 320, I maybe cheered for the wrong character. But that’s what shock yields out of Barrington Vol. 2—it challenges not only what other books label 'evil versus good' but the humanity of just 'jumping the gun' when hunting financial shelter.

Vague but urgent: find the secret door. Yes, literal in the actual building. You’ll go, who—okay, fine. Done deal—full-throttle jaw drop alert.

Before I started my latest project, I read this and the evidence-based approach makes it a very credible source of information. This has become my go-to guide for this specific topic.
